CARY GRANT

Charm Personified

Born Archibald Leach, the Anglo-American Cary Grant, became the ultimate self-assured charmer.

He was born in Bristol, England in 1904 and would eventually star in over 70 major films. He never won a competitive academy award despite being named the second greatest male star by the American Film Institute.

After a devastatingly unhappy childhood, he dropped out of school at age 14 to work in Vaudeville and acrobatic pantomime, first in Bristol and later New York before reaching Hollywood in 1931.

His controversial and convoluted private life included five wives, one daughter and two long-term relationships with men.

Grant eventually became one of the wealthiest and most sought-after Hollywood stars, especially once he began working with legendary director, Alfred Hitchcock. He starred in four of “Hitch’s” greatest films.

In later life, he devoted himself to being an attentive father and lecturer, addressing audiences which freely asked questions about the details of his life. He passed away in Davenport Iowa while on the lecture circuit at age 82.

Silvin will present details of Grant’s beguiling life, using numerous clips from 13 of his best-known films, as well as stories of Silvin’s own personal experiences with the legendary star.
