Initially a handful of pioneering businessmen, poor immigrants and merchants braved the often rough Atlantic in ships like the\u00a0<em>SS Great Western<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>SS Great Britain<\/em>.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-666 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/rrsilvin.com\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/TAT-Multiple-Ships-300x168-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"305\" \/>With the emergence of advancing technology, ships became larger, faster and more luxurious. The well-known story of the <em>RMS Titanic-<\/em>disaster only temporarily interrupted the confidence passengers came to have about safety. Within twenty years much larger and far more luxurious liners like the <em>RMS Queen Mary<\/em>, the <em>RMS Queen Elizabeth<\/em> and <em>SS Normandie<\/em>\u00a0all contributed to making the ocean liner industry indispensable, glamorous and the envy of everyone who dreamed about romance, fashion and high society.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Many European countries started competing to capture the coveted Blue Riband, the award for the fastest ship to cross the Atlantic. The huge silver and onyx trophy that was bestowed with the award added to the winning nation\u2019s sense of pride. The award was passed back and forth between several European countries all of which strove to outdo themselves and their competitors.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Ren\u00e9 Silvin will take the audience through the emerging world of transatlantic travel, from its embryonic beginnings, to the magnificent floating museums they became, and the sad endings many of these great vessels\u00a0had to endure.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">The story covers\u00a0the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, including its two World Wars which both had a major impact on transatlantic travel. Although the industry bounced back from the ravages of World War II, the emergence of jet airliners as a much faster way to cross the Atlantic was the final blow to the proud ocean liners.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Some countries tried to salvage their passenger ships by turning them into stationary museums or hotels as the aging ships became obsolete.
