However, three decades later a more luxurious, more sensational, and more opulent French ocean liner sank in New York City. Silvin describes the ship as the \u201cmost beautiful object built by man during the Twentieth Century\u201d as he brings the <em>SS Normandie<\/em> to life.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Ren\u00e9\u2019s parents lived on opposite sides of the Atlantic throughout his childhood. This unusual situation created the opportunity for him to travel frequently on the great French and British liners that survived World War II, like the <em>SS Libert\u00e9<\/em>, the <em>SS Ile de France<\/em>, the <em>RMS Queen Elizabeth<\/em> and the <em>RMS Queen Mary<\/em>. These regular crossings constitute his happiest childhood memories and gave rise to a life-long study of ocean liners, most notably the legendary <em>SS Normandie.<\/em><\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">When <em>Normandie<\/em> made her inaugural entry in New York on June 3, 1935, it is estimated that two hundred thousand spectators lined both sides of the Hudson to welcome her. Silvin explains why most authorities consider <em>Normandie<\/em> the ultimate luxury liner. The sleek leviathan was a unique trendsetter; a \u201cfloating museum\u201d as many called her. She was a ship offering the finest service amid the best example of Art Deco style. Her Grand Salon and Winter Garden were the locations where the world\u2019s most sought-after entertainers performed, and where elegant soirees were conducted.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Normandie<\/em> was loved by glamorous and sophisticated actors, brilliant philosophers and playwrights, world leaders and politicians, business magnets from both sides of the Atlantic, and by many fortunate ordinary people.<\/h4><h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-383 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/rrsilvin.com\/2.0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/image19-300x167-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"546\" height=\"304\" \/>The audience will become conversant with the coveted \u201cBlue Riband\u201d award given to the fastest ship to cross the North Atlantic.
