Richard Ren\u00e9 Silvin & Robert Versteeg<\/p>

OLLI at FAU is exceptionally fortunate to welcome the dynamic team of Richard Ren\u00e9 Silvin and Robert Versteeg, two presenters whose programs consistently sell out across South Florida. Their captivating storytelling, meticulous research, and theatrical flair make them true standouts, and this season our members will have the rare opportunity to experience their newest work firsthand.<\/p>

Richard Ren\u00e9 Silvin\u2019s lecture career began unexpectedly after the success of his first book,\u00a0Noblesse Oblige; The Duchess of Windsor as I Knew Her. What started \u201cas a lark\u201d quickly became a passion that has grown into 27 topics. Raised in Swiss boarding schools among the children of the celebrities he now profiles, Silvin brings personal insight paired with extensive research, watching every film, viewing every interview, and reading every biography, to create presentations with remarkable depth and authenticity. His programs unfold chronologically and feature more than 200 vivid slides, highlighting iconic figures such as Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Grace, and Princess Alice.<\/p>

Complementing Silvin\u2019s historical gravitas is the artistic energy of Dutch-born Robert Versteeg. With a background in classical and modern dance, he believes audiences should be immersed from the moment they enter the room. As creative director of Silvin Books for the past decade, he has designed their stunning PowerPoints and helped grow their presentation calendar to nearly 40 engagements annually. Now launching his own lectures, Versteeg draws on a lifelong love of music to explore the dramatic lives of pop icons, presenting them in a way that feels both authentic and relatable, something OLLI audiences especially appreciate.<\/p>

The most compelling part of this talk for me was Ren\u00e9\u2019s mentioning the sensations associated with the Concorde. The reference to the limited interior space and the description of the feelings on landing and taking off were truly unique. Since my work involves experiencing space, these topics resonated with me. It brought a different slant to a description of an airplane interior. Like all of Ren\u00e9\u2019s subjects, he brings interest to things I often had not explored before and gives a taste of history.<\/p> <\/div>\n

I read I Survived Swiss Boarding Schools<\/em> all at once because I just couldn\u2019t put it down. As I began reading the darkness that was Richard Rene\u2019s childhood at La Clairi\u00e8re, I was there with him and wanted to protect him against the abuse he was experiencing as a result of his parents blithely entrusting him to an institution they had not researched. As I continued reading, it was with a sigh of relief that I witnessed his transfer to Le Rosey. As I finished the book and reflected on my experience reading it, I was amazed by just how deeply I had been moved by the painful depths of a small child\u2019s fears to his unbelievable heights of success as a man. Wonderful book and certainly a must-have for those of us who love and can\u2019t get enough of Normandie. Mr. Silvin tells part of this book through the eyes of Normandie herself, as if she were the storyteller. Also some conversations of persons aboard her which transport the reader to being a participant onboard rather than just a reader of another book. Beautifully presented with quality paper and printing. Well, well worth the price. It\u2019s easy to see this book as a labor of love by Ren\u00e9 Silvin. I received this book as a gift and I love it. The story of the home is completely enjoyable and the facts (people, places, architecture) are made even more interesting by the perspective of how the story of Villa Mizner is told \u2013 I won\u2019t give away too much, but it\u2019s a fun read. The images are gorgeous and this beautiful book will remain on my coffee table front and center for a very long time, as I enjoy going back to my favorite images and guests love the story and history of this well told story.<\/p> <\/div>\n

I would like to say that Mr. Richard Ren\u00e9 Silvin is a brilliant author. His \u201cWalking the Rainbow<\/em>\u201d was a very easy read with clarity on subjects that would take an MD degree to understand. His journey has not been an easy one, I could feel the emotional impact through his words. Of course there were lighter moments, where I was amused & laughed to myself.
